NASA's Monster Rover To Reach Mars By 2012
After a successful launch this passed Saturday at 10:02am (eastern) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, NASA's car-sized rover called Curiosity is headed for Mars. As we speak the $2.5 billion (day-umm) Mars Science Laboratory is blasting through space, quickly closing the 354 million mile (570 million kilometer, DAY-UMM, DAY-UMM) gap between Earth and Mars. It'll take this nosy bastard 8 and a half months to reach its destination which should put the rover on the Red Planet sometime in August 2012.
"We are in cruise mode," said MSL project manager Pete Theisinger of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Our spacecraft is in excellent health, and it's on its way to Mars."
So most of us have seen Mission to Mars, Red Planet, Ghosts Of Mars and let us not forget the cinematic master work that is Mars Attacks. So why the hell are we going over their to start shit with the big red rock and probably provoke an interplanetary incident anyway?! Well, MSL (Mars Science Laboratory, remember that there will be a test...at some point...probably...not)--Yeah so MSL wants to confirm or not confirm if Mars is, or ever was able to support microbial life. And if you saw any of those aforementioned documentary pieces then the answer would be a resounding YES, and laser guns. The space nerds over at NASA have been planning this Spielbergian mission since 2003 and was originally scheduled for a 2009 launch (slackers). Unfortunately they couldn't meet the 2009 deadline so they pushed it back to this passed Saturday which helped boost the overall cost by 56%. Theisinger while overall satisfied with the mission so far quickly pointed out that the launch was only phase one of a very complicated mission slated to last a minimum of about 2 Earth years (or until the lasers start firing). Theisinger went on to say, "We all recognize that this is the prologue to the mission — necessary, but not sufficient." "We all have our work cut out for us in the next eight and a half months."
Yeah, Curiosity isn't supposed to land on the Red Planet until sometime in August 2012. But the mission team members won't exactly be chillin' in Miami catching a Heat game (lock-out be damned) during the 1-ton rover's long cruise. No, them dudes will. be. workin'. For example, Curiosity's transport craft will make a series of trajectory changes during its journey, with the first happening in about 2 weeks. An engineering test is also scheduled to occur in the next few weeks, with a check of the rover's 10 science-y instrument-y doodads coming shortly thereafter (hey I didn't get Black Friday off either, suck it up nerds). Mission scientists will spend the 8 and a half month trip preparing for the rover's "peace keeping" spy work on Mars' surface. During this time they'll stage 10 separate operational readiness tests, gauging their ability to respond to any potential fuck ups that may occur. "You're basically just kicking the tires and trying to shake it all out," Caltech's John Grotzinger, MSL's project scientist, told Space.com.
When it does touch down on the Martian surface Curiosity will land at the 100-mile-wide (160-kilometer-wide) Gale Crater. A mound of sediment rises 3 miles (5 km) into the Martian air from Gale's center. The rover will spy on this mountain's many layers, scrutinizing the red dirt and rocks for any signs that Martian environments may once have been habitable. The rover's landing will likely be more nerve racking than its launch did. A rocket-powered sky crane will lower Curiosity down onto the red rock on cables, a ballsy maneuver that has never been tried before (in real life). The MSL team have spent innumerable hours not playing Skyrim but instead designing, testing and validating this unprecedented landing system, and they won't even think about picking up a controller over the next eight and a half months to make sure they have the best chance of successfully getting Curiosity onto Mars' surface. Good luck guys it'll be awesome if you can finally not make Richard Branson sound like a crazy person. Mars here we come!! Props to MSNBC.
Senators Want To Lock Up US Citizens Anywhere Deemed A Battlefield
This story is so ill I didn't bother paraphrasing it. Read and let the senate know this can't be allowed to happen. Props to aclu.org. While nearly all Americans head to family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.
Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.
The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.
The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.
I know it sounds incredible. New powers to use the military worldwide, even within the United States? Hasn’t anyone told the Senate that Osama bin Laden is dead, that the president is pulling all of the combat troops out of Iraq and trying to figure out how to get combat troops out of Afghanistan too? And American citizens and people picked up on American or Canadian or British streets being sent to military prisons indefinitely without even being charged with a crime. Really? Does anyone think this is a good idea? And why now?
The answer on why now is nothing more than election season politics. The White House, the Secretary of Defense, and the Attorney General have all said that the indefinite detention provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act are harmful and counterproductive. The White House has even threatened a veto. But Senate politics has propelled this bad legislation to the Senate floor.
But there is a way to stop this dangerous legislation. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) is offering the Udall Amendment that will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values.
In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”
The solution is the Udall Amendment; a way for the Senate to say no to indefinite detention without charge or trial anywhere in the world where any president decides to use the military. Instead of simply going along with a bill that was drafted in secret and is being jammed through the Senate, the Udall Amendment deletes the provisions and sets up an orderly review of detention power. It tries to take the politics out and put American values back in.
In response to proponents of the indefinite detention legislation who contend that the bill “applies to American citizens and designates the world as the battlefield,” and that the “heart of the issue is whether or not the United States is part of the battlefield,” Sen. Udall disagrees, and says that we can win this fight without worldwide war and worldwide indefinite detention.
The senators pushing the indefinite detention proposal have made their goals very clear that they want an okay for a worldwide military battlefield, that even extends to your hometown. That is an extreme position that will forever change our country.
Now is the time to stop this bad idea. Please urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Sony To Release PS4 At The Same Time As XBOX 720
Good news gamers!! Sony's gaming division is making sure they don't get got by Microsoft again as rumors of the new XBOX console start to make the rounds around the interweb. By keeping close tabs on the Microsoft rumors Sony hopes to not get caught slippin' like they did when the XBOX 360 came out & the PS3 pretty much got left. They hope to release their PS4 console at the same time Microsoft puts out the XBOX 720.
PlayStation Europe president Jim Ryan spoke to Eurogamer and basically said it wouldn't be "a good look" for them to launch a new console on the heels of any updated Xbox, so as to not have to suck Bill Gates' dick again.
Sony is making it pretty clear that they'll announce the Playstation 4 as soon as Microsoft solidifies their plans for a new console. There's a rumor that Microsoft could announce their next Xbox as early as this January. Props to Gizmodo

IN LIVING COLOR Reboot In The Works At Fox
That's right 20-30 somethings the legendary Fox network sketch comedy series is coming back to fox. Details are sketchy (my bad, haha) thus far but it's been reported that Keenan Ivory-Wayans, who created the original will be on board to produce the rebooted version. Wayans is putting together two half-hour specials to air this spring so that Fox can get their shit together and pick up the show to air officially for next fall or mid-season. The new IN LIVING COLOR won't stray far from the original set up. There will still be musical guests and fresh new comedic talent. Let's hope SW-1 will once again man the wheels of steel & the Fly Girls will return & maybe give birth to the next Rosie Perez and J. Lo. No word yet on whether or not former alumni of the show will pop up for a cameo but there's hope. I'm personally holding out for a Homie the Clown and Fire Marshall Bill cameo. For the newbies the original IN LIVING COLOR ran from 1990-1994 & virtually launched the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier & nearly all of the Wayans family. Props to Collider.

Web Hits Dislike Button On New Facebook Layout
Let's face it the common man hates change. Not because they fear it (well, maybe) or don't understand it (well, maybe that too) but because it's generally uncomfortable & icky. So it came as no surprise to anyone that the public would pitch a bitch fit over the layout changes to facebook implemented by Mark Zuckerberg & Co. this week.
A recent survey taken of over 1,000 people conducted by Sodahead, the social voting-based site discovered 86% of Facebook users hit the dislike button (seriously, why isn't there one of those on Facebook yet??) to the new design changes announced by Zuckerberg at the Facebook F8 conference this week. Teens & women (haters) led the lynch party with approximately 90% of each group really not feeling the changes. Dudes & twenty-somethings came in second with about 80% not feeling the switch up.
Ironically the only group of folks that didn't mind the Facebook changes were IT workers. College students and Ballers (people that make over $100,00) didn't hate on the changes that much either. Upon hearing about the negative comments made about the changes which include a Twitter-like news ticker as well as profile design changes Mark Zuckerberg went on the defensive driving home the fact that the changes to Facebook had been tested by folks who both worked for Facebook & didn't have anything to do with Facebook at all. He did express also that community feedback was much appreciated & would be taken under consideration.
To appease the haters users do have the option of not applying the new version to their profile pages initially, but will eventually have to switch to the timeline layout so that all users are social networking on the same "page" so to speak. The Timeline profile mode is still being tested by Facebook designers and will be introduced to the mainstream profile modes gradually over time. So I guess if you're into change & progress you're ultimately a communist and should take that shit to Cuba. Oh well, so much for utopia. Props to International Business Times.

Republicans Call President's Tax Plan "Class Warfare"
President Obama recently proposed to impose a minimum tax rate on the country's wealthy. A tax rate on those making more than $1 million a year won't go into effect if republican lawmakers have anything to say about it. They've called the proposal "class warfare" and "a political tactic intended to portray his opponents as indifferent to the hardships facing middle-class Americans."(which they really don't need help playing the part at all.) The proposal would go into effect in 2013 and potentially limit the deductions & credits those in the "ballin'" tax bracket could get once they reach that promised land that is the million-dollar threshold. Its just a part of the Pres' big plan to reduce the deficit by $2 trillion. President Obama is scheduled to uncover his plan no earlier than this Monday. Rep. Paul D. Ryan who is the chairman of the House Budget Committee & a leading supporter of cutting spending on cutting benefit programs like Medicare (booo!!) said the President's proposal would "weigh heavily on a stagnating economy."(hater) Dude man actually went on Fox News Sunday to say the tax plan would add "further instability to our system, more uncertainty, and it punishes job creation." The proposal itself adds "a new and populist feature to Mr. Obama’s effort to raise the political pressure on Republicans to agree to higher revenues from the wealthy in return for Democrats’ support of future cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. This is all in a greater effort to cut at least $1.5 trillion in our country's spending over 10 years. (dayyyyummm!!)
The Pres' calls his plan the "Buffett Rule" after billionaire investor (& king baller) Warren Buffett who has called attention to his fellow wealthy American bastards being allowed to pay a smaller share of their income in federal taxes sticking us the middle-income earners because investment gains are taxed at a lower rate than wages.
There are many detractors to the President's proposal, as to be expected. Among them Republican Senator Lindsey Graham & Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell who went on popular news programs like Meet The Press & CNN to tell the public that taxing the rich is generally a bad idea. Senator Graham was quoted as saying: "raising taxes on billionaires and millionaires would add a minimal amount of money to the Treasury to pay off the debt." Mitch McConnell joked, “if Warren Buffett would like to give up some of his benefits, we’d be happy to talk about it.” Then went on to say there was “bipartisan opposition to what the president is recommending,” which he said would slow growth in difficult times. He also told Meet The Press,"Republicans were ready to consider means testing as part of a broader overhaul to the big entitlement programs, meaning that the well-to-do would receive less from programs like Social Security."
All in all both sides of the aisle could agree that there needs to be some kind of drastic reform to the current tax code. The President's proposal would see those with a taxable income of more than $1 million would pay a closer rate to those that they employ. Meaning everybody pays the same amount of taxes. There aren't any specific numbers in regards to the actual rates, the Pres wants to leave that to the bean counters. Administration officials said that the number of millionaires effected by this new tax plan would be fewer than 450,000 taxpaying Americans; 144 million returns were filed in 2010 alone. So You do The Math. Should we even bother? Props to nytimes.com.
