Retromatic Movie of The Week: Darkman

In 1990 filmmaker Sam Raimi wrote and directed a dark, semi-humorous, cynical, satirical piece of cinema called DARKMAN. In the film unassuming badass Liam Neeson plays scientist Peyton Westlake. A man left for dead after a brutal attack by a vicious mobster named Durrant and his...well, mob for lack of a better term by order of a lawless, greedy land developer named Louis Strack Jr. In retrospect actually Durrant's "mob" were more like a gang of thugs so yeah, gang, whatever. Anyways after being beaten and blown up and his girlfriend, played by Frances McDormand believing him dead Westlake finds himself alive & recovering in a hospital, his mind, body & soul horribly disfigured. He also finds that as a result of his injuries his brain can no longer communicate sensations of pain to his body ultimately endowing with the ability to feel no pain. Oh yeah, he also gains the ability of incalculable blinding rage that makes him freakishly strong, durable and also fuels his unwavering lust for sweet, violent revenge. Check out the original trailer. The film was pretty well received by critics & audiences making $49 million at the box office from a $16 million budget and gaining cult film status from fanboys like me. Because of this success Darkman managed to spawn 2 direct to video sequels, DARKMAN II: THE RETURN OF DURRANT & DARKMAN III: DIE, DARKMAN DIE (to which he promptly replied, no). The Darkman craze didn't stop there, oh no Marvel comics published a 3 issue run of the Darkman title and then brought him back again for a 6 issue run. Dynamite comics even brought him back in 2006 to fight Sam Raimi's other cult favorite character, Ash Williams from the EVIL DEAD franchise.
So you've got violence, revenge, love, dark humor and redemption with Sam Raimi behind the lens capturing it all for your viewing pleasure and Danny Elfman providing a dope score. You can't do much better than that. This is one of my personal favorite picks and if you haven't seen it I strongly recommend you do. I find the film is best watched after a bad day at the office over a blunt & pepsi perferrably with Jack Daniels in it. Now go, go live your dreams of unmitigated violent revenge vicariously through this excellent film. Rating: 4.5/ 5 ninja stars.

Got Beats?: Nefarious- The Dream Theory (LP)

Nefarious is a young producer from the Bay Area that specializes in the laid back. Check out the stream of his latest instrumental LP titled, THE DREAM THEORY. If you dig what you hear you can head on over to his bandcamp and purchase the album for $5. As an added bonus Nefarious is throwing in 3 bonus tracks for all those that cop the album for the low, low price of absolutely nothing (its free man). Do yourself a favor and go cop that and look out for more Nefarious tracks in the future, the boy is dope. Props to 2Dopeboyz.

Muhsinah- Stop (video)

Directed by Jelani Memory. A dope video for a dope one shot from the dope producer/song writer/songstress.

Masta Ace- Slow Down (prod by MF Doom)

Masta Ace and Metal Face Doom are linking up for a collabo titled, MA DOOM: SON OF YVONNE with Doom handling the production & Ace handling the rhymes. Its still unclear right now if Doom will be lending his vocals to any of the albums tracks or not. So we'll have to wait and see when the project is released at some point this summer. This dopecut is the first offering from the album. Check the technique.

Sam Raimi To Produce Poltergeist Remake

You May know Sam Raimi as director of movies like DARK MAN, EVIL DEAD I & II, ARMY OF DARKNESS, DRAG ME TO HELL & THE SPIDER-MAN TRILOGY. What you may not know is that he's also a card carrying producer of some of your favorite tv shows & movies (google him). Its in this capacity that Raimi has chosen to facilitate his next project, A remake of Steven Speilberg & Michael Grais' POLTERGEIST. With his next directorial project, OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL in post production Raimi has hit something of a producing "groove" with his remake of EVIL DEAD on the horizon and a confirmed THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS remake coming down the pipe. Yes, it would seem that Sam Raimi enjoys the sh!t out of producing him some movies that shouldn't really ever be re-made (ijs). According to THR, Raimi really doesen't give a f@ck and if you've ever watched any of his movies you would already be privy to this information. Seriously though, THR reports that Raimi has signed on to be a part of MGM's remake of the horror classic POLTERGEIST. Yes ninjas, they're baaaack (sorry i couldn't resist). The filmmaker's primarily role as producer of the remake will be to vet prospects for the director's seat. Nathan Kahane, Roy Lee, and Robert Tapert are all also on-board to produce but it'll be Raimi's ass if he doesn't find a director by the next full moon (that was a joke...maybe). While the idea's been skulking around Hollywood for years it is just now gaining steam to push forward into production. David Lindsay-Abaire, who penned the script for OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL also wrote the script for this new POLTERGEIST rehash. For those of you not in the know the story of Poltergeist follows a family living in a house built on an ancient burial ground who must rescue their daughter from vengeful spirits and sh!t. Released in 1982 the original was written by Steven Speilberg & Michael Grais and directed by Tobe Hooper and terrified the Kool-Aid out of me as a youth. While at the same time piquing my interest and inspiring my imagination. While this all seems like a ploy by MGM to breathe new life into their waning business model I must say i'm confident in Raimi's role as producer on the project. I would be prone to be more confident if he actually decided to directed the mofo himself. I'm not going to lie this smells like a disaster waiting to happen but i'll play along for now and see what comes from this potential sh!tstorm. Stay tuned ninjas we'll keep you posted on this story as it develops.

Retromatic Movie of the Week: The Running Man

In times like these when The Hunger Games is on everybody's must watch list, Arnold is cold chillin' cause he already conquered the illest survival game known to man. Based off a book by Stephen King, this cult classic still gets better with age. If and when you get the chance to watch the fuck out of this flick,  make sure you bring an open mind and and two pre rolled fatties. That is all..

Ninja Rating: 3.9/5 Stars

Kung Fu Flick Saturdays: Revenge of the Drunken Master (FULL MOVIE)

I hope you've been enjoying the series of kung fu flicks thus far. Its been fulfilling to see a lot of the classics that I missed, along with refreshing the ones I've seen. Although some are really cheesy, I like to see as what action/drama movies are still being composed of. "You killed my brother" is enough to set anyone up for revenge. Even if it's your master. Crazy right? Well with no poster, and just the actual movie. Check it out and I hope you enjoy.

Light it.

Saturday Morning Throwy: Beast Machines (ep.1)

From 1999-2001 well before Michael Bay felt the urge to have robots blow sh!t up we got Transformers: Beast Machines. This was the series that followed Transformers: Beast Wars . Which did not impress me at all. But Beast Machines was special to me. It featured a trimmed down team of Tranformers who felt more like refugees than heroes who got back to their homeworld of Cybertron only to find it radically changed. So as to not give away to much i'm going to stop typing and let you enjoy this weekend's throwy.

Devastator vs. Bruticus vs. Menasor

Tupac Back...As A Hologram?

Let the Tupac sighting frenzy begin. At the Coachella music festival this passed Sunday night the Don Makaveli himself made an impromptu appearance alongside Dr. Dre and Snoop on stage.

This display of awesomeness made so much noise on the blogosphere & media cycles that there is now talk of a new tour. Ed Ulbrich of Digital Domain Media Group Inc. who was responsible for Pac's reincarnation explains that the image isn't a hologram which would be a 3-D depiction but its actually a 2-D rendering of the lengendary rapper.

Reps for both the good doctor and Snoop are going ahead with talks to make the tour a reality. The main challenge is scheduling a tour around a 2-D version of Pac is where to do go & who do you put him with. Obviously candidates to appear alongside Pac would be stars, Eminem, Wiz Khalifa and 50 Cent. Venues would most likely consist of mostly stadium gigs. However Dre & Snoop have expressed interest in doing a smaller more limited tour featuring only them and Pac.

Stay tuned for more info ninjas as this story is bound to develop more in the near future.

Retromatic Movie Of The Week: Class Of 1999

The year was 1990 and sh!t was kinda rough out there. The crack era was in full swing. We had a Bush in office. Brothas were gettin' shot for Jordans & 8 ball jackets. And Vanilla Ice had the number one song in the country. Like i said sh!t was rough out there. The world was a crazy place to be so like any other self respecting generation we channeled our anxiety & angst into thought provoking art. Enter film maker Mark L. Lester who spoke to rampant & vastly declining urban education system with our Retromatic movie of the week: CLASS OF 1999. Check out the trailer.

Whoa, where's gentrification when you need it? (just kidding, f@ck gentrification) As you could see in 1999 our schools were basically comprised of kids who's parents made them watch Beyond Thunderdome one too many times and violence. We were on the brink of oblivion. Then came Stacy Keach, a white haired, crazy-eyed Stacy Keach. So the Keach plays Dr. Bob Forrest, basically a super villain who unleashes military kill bots on an unsuspecting "at risk" Seattle High School to teach & counsel the unruly students dressed like Mad Max extras. For awhile everybody is cool until the kill borgs start to malfunction and this happens...

It's at this time the students start to suspect something is really f@cking wrong with these teachers and start to uncover the sinister plot that has befallen their school and fight back against the scourge of education that are these government issue murder bots. But not before the teachers wig out and kill a few of the students. Did i mention that Pam Grier was in this too? I don't wanna give away too much more but its B movie excellence that should not be missed.

rating: 3.5/5 ninja stars.

Ninjas Love the Ladies: @JeriJ

So on the search for this week gorgeous addition to our weekly agenda, I was feeling like we needed to get some nice looking chocolate honey. The more I looked, the more I was discouraged by the fact that there aren't too many darker skinned models that get that much exposure. I mean hey, I like'em all shades, but if you know me, you know I'm a fan of darker complexions. Anyways, I happened to find this gorgeous woman that fits the script. Enjoy!

DJ Premier, Rakim, Nas & Krs-One - Classic

Aight the last Primo joint for now! But yo, you can't tell this shit smell like straight stinky sour hip hop. Shit is doopid retarded, slap ya mans in the face type shit. Take that, take that minus the flash suits.

Group Home - Supa Star 1995

A fully produced project from DJ Premier makes one ask, who the fuck Group Home is. So if you haven't had a chance to listen to "Livin' Proof" make sure you do for historical purposes. "I'm gettin more iller than a zodiac killer." Pay attention!

Crooklyn Dodgers '95 - Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers 1995

Chubb Rock, Jeru the Damaja and O.C. do what they been been doing for this joint off of the Clockers, a Spike Lee joint, soundtrack which is over one of my favorite Primo's tracks ever. Also if you ever got a chance to listen to Styles P's "Ghost in the Shell mixtape, he fuckin' destroyed this shit. Check the song, check the flick and check that mixtape!

213 - So Fly

Now I know for sure there was no official video for this mixtape joint, but when 213... and if you don't know who 213 is, google it!... but like I was sayin' when they took this Monica Instrumental for "so gone", there is no way that Nate Dogg wasn't gonna kill the hook. Even Warren G did aight, so yea its a classic.

8 Ball & MJG - Stop Playing Games

Some ill fly shit from a really really really big guy. The fattest mack, 8ball spit some crazy trill shit over a unsolved mystery sampled track and even got Diddy talkin' shit at the very beginning. If you get a chance to find it, Jadakiss' verse on this beat was fuckin retarded! In a good way.

M.O.P. - Cold As Ice

When I was in high school, I put my lil bro onto this joint and he was rocking it not even kowing what he was saying. "Niggas think M.O.P. stand for mop and shit... DON'T DON'T DON'T get it twisted!" If you didn't know, figure it the fuck out.

A Tribe Called Quest feat. Busta Rhymes - Oh My God 1994

Back when Busta was the most outlandish artist in the game with ridiculously oversized hats and loud ass outfits, ATCQ linked with him and released this joint. Peep the simplicity of the concept and lyricism.

Organized Konfusion - Fudge Pudge 1991

Before all the heavy duty hardcore era, there was funk fly dopeness going on. So roll something back and open your mind for Quaid's sake!

Redman - Can't Wait (Remix) 1994

For those of you who only know Red for being a funny character and Em's favorite rapper. Before any of you kids walk, he was spittin that dope Jersey shit. Act like you know.

Got Beats?: Marv Middle

Well if you got need for beats like I do, you go surfing the web and turn every stone. This local talent was passed on by word of mouth and I'm glad my boy from New Ro put me on. Introducing Marv Middle with his second drop with dope beats amongst some surpises on, Welcome 2 Marvill. Check out on datpiff.com, and make sure you take a good listen...

According to Columbia University chemist Ronald Breslow somewhere in the universe lies a civilization of extraterrestrial dinosaurs. Based on his journal article concerning the origins of organic molecules on Earth, he maybe right.

Kung Fu Flick Saturdays: The Shaolin Drunken Monk (FULL MOVIE)

The true story of the life of my great to third ancestors.  Dig the sound track. Dig the fight scenes. And, as usual... try and understand that these kind of movies are all about two things. Fighting, and Bitches.

Thundercat- Walkin (video)

Everything about this music video from Left coast super bassist, Thundercat is so ninja!! So with that said check it out & go cop Thundercat's debut LP THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE APOCALYPSE which is out now. Also if you can name all of the cameo's in this video Dirty Ninja will personally award you with...a handshake & a job well done. Directed by Holly & Kelly Port btw.

More weapons of the Future, Today!

Skynet, here we come!

As time passes people are looking more and more into sci-fi for inspiration to deal with the issues of the modern day. That being said, we all have all digital everything. Holograms of children will be all we need soon enough and we will become seat bound fatties like in Wall-e.

But while we are still mobile, and the number of violent acts rise... law enforcement officials and military counterparts must have ways to subdue the billions of people in the world. So whats the best way to go  about immobilizing the perps? The STFU gun? Perhaps, but in the same respect, scientists have been tinkering with other ideas of how to approach non-lethal ways of stabbing people in the back... of their brains.

Ted - Restricted Trailer

Seth McFarlane's first motion picture. This fucking looks hilarious!!!!

Retromatic Movie of the Week: Commando

Before getting the chance to run California with Terminator fist covered in flesh gelatin, he conquered the biggest challenge ever. Fatherhood. This is in the days when it was still OK to fuck around with the Latin lady that is cleaning your house. The good ol' 80's. Action packed with more cheesy lines than Chester the Cheetah can sniff, this instant classic show Arnold take down everybody, everywhere all the time. Way before Dwayne Johnson decided raise an eyebrow, this is how shit went down. Hollywood style!

Rating: 4.6/5 Ninja Stars

Skinny and Scales- Black Friday (prod by Ryan Turner)

I always liked these two styles the best out the group. Now its seems they've teamed up to drop a project together. Skinny DeVille & Fish Scales' THE NAPPY ROOTS PRESENTS: SH!T'S BEAUTIFUL is currently on the way. In the mean time this is the first single from the project.

G.R.A.M.Z.- The Learning (video)

I just discovered G.R.A.M.Z. but i'm definitely liking what i hear. His new project MALCOLM'S LIL GREEN CAR comes out this summer.

Rah Digga- The Nigga In Me

Whoa again, in light of recent developments...Shots fired!! Digga had this to say about it:

I didn’t make this record for press purposes or for hype cuz that’s not my thing. I got wind of various artists referencin me in a negative fashion. They poked fun at me I’m just pokin back. Its all sport to me. I wish em all the best, they just need to understand who is off limits. MC Lyte is off limits. Rah Digga is off limits. Respect those who kept hip hop raw so that we could still have a culture or get a first hand lesson in a lyrical ass whoopin. Love is love.

Props to 2Dopeboyz.

Kardinal Offishall- Get It In (B4 I Go) (prod by Nottz)

Whoa!! this heat rock's from Kardi & Nottz' upcoming A.M.T.R.I.M or Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself.

Make sure you check out the whole flick after the jump!

Saturday Morning Throwy: Robocop (ep.1)

Morning Ninjas! This weekend's throwy comes way back from 1988 with the original Robocop cartoon. What I love about the 80s is that back then no one gave a f@ck. Especially not about children's fragile & impressionable minds. So why not make a cartoon based on one of the most violent, satirical movies of that time. Ahh, the Reagan era, gotta love it. Y'all go ahead and enjoy episode 1.

Then VS Now - "One for the team"

Now whether you have or haven't ever taken one for the team is on you, but everybody has a certain level of love for the circles they run with. I just wanted to make a comparison of what used to be, and what is being flooded in to the modern ears.

For example, nowadays people might take a track like this and think... hey, this guy really supports his team. Monetarily and vocally. Awesome.

Right? OK, so moving forward. I just think things were a little different not too many galaxies ago.
Like for example.
Granted one is more angled towards the bitches. But, C'mon... is anybody really going to compete with Nate Dogg? The crew was actually in the song, and kept it legit.

Anyways, I'll just leave that idea out there for ya'll to simmer on.

Chris Brown X 9th Wonder

So if this is news to you... (besides the look at me now verse) Chris Breezy is a rapping. I want to know what the project is going to look like because anybody has listened to any of 9th production with different artists, you'll know that he brings out a different element from each artist.

The R&B artists becoming MCs has been a pretty decent trend following the producer slash rapper era. I'm just curious to see if we will see a battle between Beezy and Trey. Hmmm?

In REview: E.Harper- Audio Crack Pt 1.New Jack City

At first listen to rapper E. Harper's Raydo produced mixtape Audio Crack...it's evident that he isn't a "n.o.w." rapper. And by "N.O.W." i mean,
"Never
Over
Whelm".
'Cause let's face it, most rapper's these days are just mutant rehashes of styles & flows past that to the weary, sonically traveled ear can sound...shall we say...unexciting. This however isn't the case with E. Harper. He can't be a mutant rehash because he's from a time where skill & content was actually, vehemently given a f@ck about. You can think of him as the hip hop Scott Bakula, making the Quantum Leap from then to now, skill set & work ethic intact.
