Synopsis For Neill Blomkamp's Next Film Released
In 2009 first-time film director Neill Blomkamp released DISTRICT 9.
A powerful directorial debut that thrust Blomkamp into the public eye as a film maker to watch. The years since have seen Bloomkamp taking his time thoughtfully choosing his next film instead of "striking while the iron is hot" and doing any project that came across his desk. Among those potential projects was a live action film for HALO (yes that HALO). He even did a "low-budget" short to show what he could do with the title.
That was some ill shit right??!! Yeah, so officially it was announced back in 2010 that Blomkamp's next film was going to be another sci-fi actioner titled ELYSIUM. This time starring an all-star cast including Matt "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" Damon, Jodie Foster and the awesome, criminally under utilized William Fichtner among others. Since then the film had been kept on the serious "hush, hush". I honestly forgot about the whole thing until today when Collider got a hold of the official synopsis of the film. Check it out:
"In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds."
So it sounds like ELYSIUM will be another foray into a socio-political commentary which Blomkamp is very familar with after making DISTRICT 9. I'm excited to see how this will all play out on screen with such a capable and talented cast. And can't wait until March 1, 2013 when it hits a theater near you.
